Curriculum
Independent, confident and successful learners
We provide a broad and balanced curriculum at Pot Kiln which gives all children the opportunity to develop as independent, confident and successful learners and who have high aspirations.
Our pupils are provided with a vibrant, engaging, knowledge-rich curriculum that equips them with the skills and understanding necessary to be active, responsible citizens in an ever-evolving world. We expect success from all of our pupils. Everyone is encouraged to achieve as individuals, in preparation for how they will contribute to society, the economy and the environment.
Our learning community seeks to inspire our pupils and in 2021/2022 we have renamed our classes after inspirational people. Over the academic year all children will have the opportunity to learn about all 12 inspirational people, ranging from activists to sports people to national treasures such as David Attenborough, Greta Thunberg to Marcus Rashford and Mary Anning.
This will give our children the skills to make a positive contribution to their community and the wider society. This will also give our children positive role models to aspire to.
The curriculum pathways at Pot Kiln are creative and designed to teach and embed important knowledge and understanding and life skills. They provide children with memorable experiences in addition to diverse and rich opportunities.
Each curriculum pathway enables progression and continuity throughout the school under the guidance of the subject leaders. The team of curriculum leaders are constantly developing and evaluating the subject areas. They adapt and improve the curriculum alongside our ever changing technological world. The new curriculum planning and assessment tool (2021/2022 and beyond) which will be implemented in September was developed by 5 staff team members in order to refine and hone it before implementation. It ensures all pupils have an ambitious curriculum which is designed to give all of our learners the knowledge and cultural capital they need to be successful adults.
Our school nurtures its children. What do we mean by nurture – Nurturing means more than giving your child food, shelter and clothing. It is about building a healthy and strong emotional relationship (attachment) between our staff and our children and between the children themselves. We do this through our positive and respectful culture and by creating an environment where our children feel safe. Our curriculum supports the personal, emotional and mental well-being of all the children. If a child is particularly in need they may also access Thrive support. Thrive is a programme of social and emotional development and growth for children and young people.
We focus on developing children’s moral, spiritual, social and cultural understanding, as well as appreciating British Values, ensuring all our children are well prepared for life in modern Britain. Our curriculum enables the skills of resilience, confidence and independence to be fostered and we regularly check in with the children as to their physical and mental health. Our School Parliament helps our children to play a meaningful role in the leadership of our school and also helps their understanding of the values of our school house system of collective tolerance, liberty of the individual, mutual respect and democracy.
